If it is in my heart, I honor it. If it is in my heart, I am unstoppable in my attention toward it. I become diligent. I listen, and I do what I can.
Sometimes, we call this “compulsion,” or we otherwise judge it in our culture. We ask, “Why?” My answer is simple: I cannot take my heart’s attention off of the conflict at Standing Rock, nor the larger horror story of our history.
I can not go to North Dakota. A 24 or 64 year old version of me would go, without question. 40 year old me can not go. That is my truth today, though I’d like to make a different one.
To all of you who are going, and who are supporting, I honor you. To the law enforcement who are there and responding the best they can, I honor you.
To those who are showering cruelty on the people, I hope you find the peace you need, so you can make better decisions as your life unfolds from this very moment forward. May the traumas you are perpetuating haunt you until your hearts have no choice but to soften.
There is a hungry shadow at play, and it is beckoning to us all. We must keep looking up.
